Abstract

This paper analyzes child malnutrition in Ecuador. Child malnutrition affects a quarter of the population under five years, representing twice the average of the Latin American region, and overweight and obesity are above the average for the region. In this sense, Ecuador as a middle-income country has a high level of child malnutrition. This problem is even more alarming when disaggregated by ethnic group, province, region, quintile of income and education of the mother. During the last decade there has been a diversity of policies, programs, institutions and actors, but progress has been limited. An interesting and unexploited aspect of the problem of child malnutrition is its analysis from public policies.
