The conventional view has shown that, in general, there is a high degree of consensus, and sometimes even unanimity, regarding the decision of the National Congress to ratify trade agreements. However, there are cases in which such consensus seems to disappear in favor of a higher degree of opposition or abstention. The reason for this has received little coverage. Faced with this challenge, this thesis seeks to answer the question: What factors influence the decision of Chilean members Deputies to reject or abstain from ratifying trade agreements? I examine the cases of the Economic Complementation Agreement (ECA) N°35; the Chile-Canada Free Trade Agreement; the Chile-United States Free Trade Agreement and the Strategic Economic Partnership Agreement between Chile, New Zealand, Singapore, and Brunei, also known as P4.
